Mayor: Bike Lane Ordinance Wrong Direction For City

Providence Mayor Brett Smiley is pushing back against an effort by members of the City Council over bicycle lanes.

Last night, Councilman John Goncalves introduced an ordinance that required the council's approval to remove any bike lanes.

The measure was brought about after Smiley announced the lane on South Water Street would be removed to bring back two traffic lanes and ease congestion caused by the closure of the westbound span of the Washington Street Bridge.

The ordinance has been referred to a committee. Smiley expressed disapproval of the proposal and noted the bike lane was moved to and would be safer for cyclists.
