Phillies Cancel Their Weekend Series After Two Positive COVID-19 Tests

The Philadelphia Phillies have canceled all activities at Citizens Bank Park after a coach and member of the home clubhouse staff tested positive for the coronavirus. As a result, the team has canceled its weekend series with the Toronto Blue Jays. It is unknown if the Phillies will play their next series against the New York Yankees, which is scheduled to begin on Monday (August 3).

So far, no players on the Phillies have tested positive for COVID-19.

The Phillies have not played since Sunday when they hosted the Miami Marlins. Prior to that game, four players on the Marlins tested positive for the coronavirus, but the game was held anyway. The next day, the Marlins reported over a dozen positive tests, and the team's season was put on hold until at least Monday. In total, 17 Marlins players and two coaches have tested positive in the past week.

While Major League Baseball seems committed to playing out its shortened 60-game season, it appears unlikely that the Marlins or the Phillies will be able to make up at least a week's worth of missed games.

"Everything is changing on an hourly basis. We know nothing. But, for Phillies to play 60 games in 2020, they'd have to do 57 games in 56 days beginning Monday. It doesn't feel feasible:" Phillies beat reporter Matt Gelb wrote on Twitter.

MLB has reportedly prepared for that situation and would use winning percentages to determine playoff seedings.
